Lanolin is a waxy substance derived from wool which is predominantly used in cosmetic and medicated products because of its
emollient, moisturizing, and emulsifying properties. It can also be found in the industrial setting.
How can I avoid it?
Choosing cosmetics that are lanolin free is accomplished by reading the package labeling. In the industrial setting, requesting Safety
Data Sheets (SDS) may help identify potential sources of exposure.
Lanolin-allergic individuals may be able to tolerate some lanolins and not others because lanolin varies in composition, depending on
its source. By doing a use test, one can confirm the safety of the product before widespread use. A trial-and-error method of avoiding
an allergen in a product can be performed by applying the product to the forearm in the same small area twice a day for a week. If no
dermatitis develops, the product may likely be used safely.
Since lanolin is derived from wool, some individuals may need to avoid wool as well.
